The mycology laboratory performs a full range of diagnostic testing. Direct examination of specimens using KOH-Calcofluor and culture of both systemic and superficial specimens support the diagnosis of fungal infections in the immunocompetent and increasing immunocompromised host.
Investigations also include detection of Pneumocystis jirovecii (PCP) using immunofluorescent methods, detection of Cryptococcus neoformans from spinal fluid and blood by latex agglutination, and yeast susceptibility testing using broth microdilution.
Galactomannan testing is available for diagnosis and surveillance of immunocompromised patients. Acceptable specimens include blood and bronchoalveolar lavage.
The Mycology laboratory is located at Hamilton Health Sciences, Hamilton General Site. Galactomannan testing is performed at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton, Charlton site. Routine testing at the Hamilton General Site is available on a 7-day basis from 0800-1700. Detection of Cryptococcus neoformans is available 24 hours.
The mycology laboratory is a participating laboratory in both QMP-LS and CAP external proficiency. For additional information, contact Dr. Deborah Yamamura at 905 527 4322 ext 46111.
